Mumbai, Dec 12 (IBNS): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced to host Afghanistan for their first-ever Test match.

The historic match that signifies the strong bond that the two nations and their respective cricket Boards share will be held in the upcoming home season (2018-19), the BCCI said in a statement.

BCCI said it has always stood by the Afghanistan Cricket Board and have taken active steps in the development of the game within the country and even outside.

In 2015, the BCCI and Afghanistan Cricket Board signed an MOU with Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority to use Sports Complex as the home ground for Afghanistan Cricket Team.

Afghanistan have played five ODIs and three T20Is at the venue against Ireland.

Cricketers from Afghanistan took part in the 10th edition of the VIVO IPL and left a strong impression with impressive performances.

Sharing their views on the historic announcement, Vinod Rai, Chairman, CoA, said: "The game of cricket can be further enriched when more and more countries take part. I am delighted that the BCCI has agreed to extend a helping hand to Afghanistan and will formally welcome them into the Test arena by playing their first-ever Test. I congratulate both the Boards and wish Afghanistan the best as they now prepare for the longer format of the game."

Amitabh Choudhary, Acting Secretary, said: "Afghanistan have proved their mettle in the short format of the game and now they have an opportunity to prove themselves in the longer format. The BCCI has a deep bond with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and I am thrilled at the development and congratulate everyone.”

Rahul Johri, BCCI CEO, said: "We have been working closely with the officials of Afghanistan Cricket Board and look forward to seeing history being made. We are aware that fans from both the nations are eagerly waiting for the historic clash. The BCCI will work with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and announce the details shortly.”
