India, SA cricket teams observe moment of silence in honour of Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Centurion/UNI: The Indian and South African cricket teams observed a moment of silence ahead of the first Test in honour of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who died at the age of 90 on Sunday.
South African players also wore black armbands as a mark of respect.
Tutu played a crucial role in a campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid in South Africa. He was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
"The passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa," South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa tweeted.
Desmond Tutu was a patriot without equal; a leader of principle and pragmatism who gave meaning to the biblical insight that faith without works is dead.
