India complete seven years of its second World Cup win

Mumbai, Apr 2 (IBNS): It was one 2nd April when a six on the long-on by then Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had brought the World Cup to the nation after a long wait of 28 years.

Indian team led by Dhoni had lifted the second World Cup on this day in 2011.

A tough contest between India and Sri Lanka ended up with the last smile on the faces of men-in-blue.

Chasing a 270 plus target, India were nervous upfront but it was a long partnership between Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni ensured a win in the finals.

While Gambhir missed his World Cup final century by just three runs, a captain's knock of 91 by Dhoni dashed the hopes of Sri Lankans to lift the title.

Dhoni became the second Indian captain to win the World Cup after Kapil Dev, who had lifted the trophy in 1983.

As India complete 7th year of its World Cup win, the International Cricket Council (ICC), which runs the sport, recreated the moments of the match on Twitter.

Reminiscing the moments, former Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag tweeted, "Moment of a lifetime, this day 7 years ago, a billion people erupted in joy. What a night! What were you doing that night ?"

The next cricket World Cup will be held in England and Wales in 2019.
