Ind-NZ: Ashwin, Jadeja share four wickets as visitors lose half their side
At lunch, the Black Caps lost half their side while putting up 238 runs and still trailing by 80 runs.
It started in the fifth over of the day as Ashwin trapped Latham (58) in front to break a 124-run partnership and give India a much needed break.
Four balls later, a Ravindra Jadeja delivery struck Ross Taylor's pad as they veteran batsman departed for a duck.
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson (75), who looked solid throughout the second day, was undone by a delivery which turned back sharply.
His 137-ball vigil was ended by Ashwin.
With Williamson's departure, NZ slumped from 152 for 1 to 170 for 4.
Following a mini collapse, Luke Ronchi (38) and Mitchell Santner combined well to put up 49 runs for the fifth wicket, until the former was dismissed by Jadeja.
A failed sweep shot paved his end as the ball hit his pads.
Santner (28) is at the crease with Watling (3) and will resume batting when play resumes.
