Former cricketers laud India, Rohit Sharma for victory against South Africa

Southampton, Jun 6 (IBNS): The Indian cricket team and Rohit Sharma, the star player against South Africa, earned huge appreciations from former cricketers after the men-in-blue defeated the Proteas in their first World Cup match on Wednesday.

Sachin Tendulkar tweeted, "A great game of cricket played by #TeamIndia. @yuzi_chahal and @Jaspritbumrah93 bowled exceptionally well and gave a perfect start. It was lovely to see @ImRo45 play a mature innings and stay till the end and get us home."

Virender Sehwag said: "Shaabash Rohit ! Bumrah, Chahal creating pressure throughout . Fantastic win to start the World Cup for Team India."

"A wonderful, mature innings from Rohit Sharma. Great assessment of the situation and seeing India through to the win in the end, a hallmark of top players @ImRo45 . A well begun World Cup campaign for Team India" VVS Laxman said on Twitter.

"Great start @BCCI Team india... great bowling @Jaspritbumrah93 @yuzi_chahal and superb inn @ImRo45 shaaana.. keep up the great work guys" Harbhajan Singh said.

Sharma made an unbeaten 122 on India's debut match in this World Cup to ensure a win after the bowlers did a good job restricting the Proteas to 227. 

With 42, Chris Morris was the highest scorer of the South African side.

While India's Chahal picked up four wickets conceding 51 runs, Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar took two wickets each.

India scored the winning runs with 15 balls to spare.
