Following FIFA World Cup stint, Costa Rica international Johnny Acosta to join Kolkata's East Bengal football club

Kolkata, July 11 (IBNS): Costa Rican defender Johnny Acosta Zamora, who played three group stage matches in ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia, has signed for Kolkata based football club East Bengal, officials said on Wednesday.

Johnny Acosta, a 35-year-old footballer from Costa Rica, plays for Colombian football team Rionegro Águilas and will join East Bengal FC from the upcoming session.

Acosta played a match against Brazil in Russia World Cup on June 22 as a Costa Rican defender, which his team lost 2-0 to the five-time world champions.

Confirming the news of Acosta's transfer to East Bengal FC, club official Debabrata Sarkar told IBNS, "We wanted to recruit an international defender in our team and we have chosen Johnny Acosta as his defense against Brazil and the other two teams was competent."

"Through an agent, we confirmed the deal with the Costa Rican footballer on Tuesday," Sarkar said.

However, the East Bengal official refused to disclose the worth and other details pertaining to the deal.

Sarkar said that his club is looking to recruit another international striker.

"We are looking to recruit another striker of international calibre in our squad," Sarkar added.

According to sources in the club, Johnny Acosta is likely to join the team in the middle of upcoming Calcutta Football League (CFL) which is scheduled to commence from July 18.
