CWG: Mirabai Chanu claims gold

Gold Coast, Apr 5 (IBNS): Indian weight-lifter Mirabai Chanu took the top spot in the women's 48 kg weight lifting division at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

During the course of the event, Chanu also created a new CWG record by lifting a total weight of 196 kgs.

Tweeting about her feat, Sports Authority of India wrote: "#MirabaiChanu claims Gold in 48kg & Created Games record /Commonwealth record by lifting 196 kg in total. She is a TOPS Athlete. Congratulations to the star weightlifter for the magnificent performance! The entire nation is proud of you! #SAI ."

Earlier in the day, Gururaja Poojary opened India's medal account at the Games by clinching silver in the 56 kg category weightlifting.

In Table Tennis, the Indian female peddlers defeated their Sri Lankan counterparts 3-0, while the shuttlers (badminton) in the mixed division trounced the same opposition by a margin of 5-0.
