Bengaluru, Apr 6 (IBNS): Non-playing captain Mahesh Bhupathi of India's Davis Cup team, on Thursday, selected Rohan Bopanna over veteran tennis player Leander Paes for the Asia/Ocenia tie against Uzbekistan, according to media reports.

Bopanna is ranked 24 in the ATP men’s doubles charts.

Paes, on the other hand, is standing on the threshold of creating a Davis Cup history.

Currently, with 42 wins, he shares the honour with Italian legend Nico Pietrangeli, of winning the maximum number of doubles matches in Davis Cup history.

The three-day Asia/Ocenia tie begins on April 7 in Bengaluru.

India's Ramkumar Ramanathan is pitted against Uzbekistan's Temur Ismailov for the first match. Prajnesh Gunneswaran will take on Sanjar Fayziev for the second singles.

For the doubles, Rohan Bopanna will team up with Sriram Balaji to play against Farrukh Dustov and Sanjar Fayziev.

Paes, who played his Davis Cup debut match against Japan in 1990, has played 55 Davis Cup ties and has 42 doubles rubber wins to his credit.
