Gros Islet, Aug 10 (IBNS): A brilliant sixth wicket stand between R Ashwin (75*) and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha (46*) helped India recover from a disastrous start and end the first day of the third Test against West Indies at a respectable 234 for five here on Tuesday.

Saha and Ashwin added 108 runs to help India recover from a poor start they made earlier.

Opener Lokesh Rahul (50) made some important contribution but the remaining batting lineup otherwise struggled on the first day.

Shikhar Dhawan (1),  Virat Kohli (3) and Rohit Sharma (9) departed early.

Ajinkya Rahane contributed 35 runs before losing his wicket to Roston Chase.

Teenage paceman Alzarri Joseph made an impressive debut for West Indies as he picked up the wickets of Kohli and Sharma.

He ended the day at 2-38.

Shannon Gabriel took one wicket while it was Chase who bowled well in the match and grabbed two wickets.

Ashwin shined with the bat and hit four boundaries in his knock

India lead the series 1-0.
