Romcom is less explored in Tollywood now: Payel Sarkar
Kolkata, July 12 (IBNS) Actor Payel Sarkar, having delivered a string of hits from masala comedy Jamai 420 to arthouse genre Chotuskone, says in Bengali film industry romcom is a less explored genre.
The doe-eyed beauty, having just completed a dance sequence for 'Jomer Raja Dilo Bar' with Abir Chatterjee, tells IBNS "true romcom is a less explored genre with lots of present day films tackling serious issues.
"I am a staunch feminist in the film, a born man hater who has a change of heart meeting Abir's character in the film, who is too good a boy with no complications," Payel says.
"But femininity is not the whole thing but a subplot of the love story where traditional elements of Bengali films have been retained. If you grew up watching films as Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne or Hirak Rajar Deshe you won't miss that flavour in Jomer Raja. Who has not heard that immortal Bhooter Raja Song by Anup Ghosal! It evokes nostalgia within me," she says.
About being cast opposite Abir in the film, Payel says, "This is our sixth film together. And he always gangs up with others to pull my legs. His sole job may be. You don't know what he is up to."
About the fantasy element in the Anupam Roy directed track, with a black hat wearing Rajatava as the 'King of hell' flanked by the lead
pair, she says: "Songs are always fantasies only. Songs are always larger than life."
"Think about any previous mainstream films - the outdoor shooting part which is not integral to the plot usually took place in countries like Switzerland or Mauritius. Fantasies are sought to be incorporated to give the audience a break from the progress of the plot," she says.
Stating her character has lots of graphs and negotiates through ups and downs in life, Payel says director Abir Sengupta's unique storytelling and the casting weighed in favour of her taking up the role. The film, produced by Pramod Films and Anushree Mehta will be released this September.
