'I really want to work in Srijit Mukherji’s love story': Angana Roy reveals her wishlist amid Winkle Twinkle theatrical run

Actor Angana Roy, who features in Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming film Winkle Twinkle, opened up about her journey from child artiste in Aalo to working with the acclaimed filmmaker. Speaking to IBNS correspondent Souvik Ghosh, Roy discussed her character Indrani, her approach to ensemble casts, her admiration for Mukherji’s storytelling and her dream of featuring in his love story. She also spoke about manifestation, staying private about her political views and the impact of artificial intelligence on artistes.

Q. How did you feel when you were locked in for the film?

A. I was super happy. He had wanted to work with me for quite some time, as he likes my work. And as an actor, who wouldn't want to work with him? I was roped in at a time when I was recovering from health issues, so the film felt like a big deal to me.

I always seek a note from the directors I work with, and this film was no exception. When I asked for a note, Srijit Mukherji wrote “finally” in large letters on the script. That was really memorable.

Q. How would you sum up your journey as a child actor from Alo to featuring in Srijit Mukherji's cast in Winkle Twinkle?

A. I feel really grateful. I am loving the way my work is progressing. I have a long way to go and explore diverse roles.

Q. Do you believe in manifestation? Did you ever manifest working with a particular director?

A. Yes, I do manifest a lot. I am currently manifesting the kind of films I want to be part of. Like every other actor, I also had my own checklist, which undoubtedly included Srijit Mukherji's name.

I really want to work in a Srijit Mukherji love story at some point. I love his fantastic sense of emotions and his songs, which are immortal.

Q. Do you fear getting lost in the crowd when featuring in an ensemble cast?

A. No, I don't think that way. I think the audience is now aware of my merit as a female lead who can carry a series. I am always open to feedback. I believe in my craft and in honing my skills. I am not insecure as an actor. I believe in getting what we deserve.

Talking about ensemble casts, I think they help actors get nourished by the skills of the diverse performers on board. Moreover, Winkle Twinkle is important to me as the film will become a testament to Bratya Basu's drama. I hope this film showcases my range as an actor even more.

Q. What was your research work for the film?

A. I read the text and watched a YouTube version. But I entered the shooting floor with a blank slate, as Srijit-da had clearly stated that the audience wouldn't expect something similar to what Bratya Basu had shown in the drama, considering the difference between the two media.

So, I had the liberty to approach my character, Indrani, in my own way, obviously in collaboration with Srijit Mukherji.

Q. Could you relate to any trait of Indrani?

A. Her observation power. I am a keen observer in real life, besides being hungry for knowledge. Indrani remains non-political amid the ideological conflicts within the family.

As the movie progresses, Indrani, being a quiet observer, gradually becomes the lens of the audience. She is like a sponge but tries to manage what is unfolding in the family.

Q. Do you find yourself in such positions in real life?

A. Like every other family, my family too has conflicting political beliefs. I am politically very aware but inactive. I am aware of everything one should know about what is happening around the world but choose to discuss it only with close friends.

I prefer to remain private about my beliefs, primarily.

Q. How do you see technological advancement, particularly AI, as a Gen Z artiste? Do you have any fear?

A. I think we can't stop technological advancement. It's the crux of society. But I believe art is a process of collaboration and creation, and no one can take away the heart of creation.

Each process of creation is distinct. While I can adjust and deliver different kinds of emotions across films, technology will have limitations at some point.
