Bangladesh shock: Hindu jeweller’s body found in floating drum, police suspect murder

The victim was identified as 50-year-old Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar, who jointly owned a jewellery shop in the Atharbari Building area of Mymensingh.

His wife and son identified the body on Thursday. Police have yet to identify those allegedly responsible for his death, and no case had been filed in connection with the incident as of Thursday.

Police told The Daily Ittefaq that a token issued by the Mymensingh Hindu Co-operative Credit Union Limited was found in the pocket of the trousers worn by the deceased.

Acting on the lead, police contacted the organisation. Representatives examined the token and helped establish the identity of the deceased as Niranjan Chandra, the newspaper reported. His identity was subsequently confirmed by his family.

According to local media reports, Niranjan lived with his wife and son in a rented house in Mymensingh’s Stadium area. He reportedly left home on September 20 and remained missing.

His nephew reportedly saw him in the Stadium area on September 21.

Ruhul Amin, Sub-Inspector of Kotwali Model Police Station, told The Daily Ittefaq that after obtaining the token, police contacted the Mymensingh Hindu Co-operative Credit Union Limited, whose representatives examined it and helped identify Niranjan.

The police officer said Niranjan had previously stayed away from home for three or four days before returning. As a result, his family assumed that he had gone somewhere and would return as usual, and did not file a General Diary (GD) at the police station after he went missing, the newspaper reported.

Muhammad Shibirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, told The Daily Ittefaq that marks consistent with sharp-weapon injuries were found on the deceased’s head and chest.

Police suspect Niranjan may have been killed before his body was placed inside the plastic drum and dumped in the water. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is ongoing.
