Dhaka crackdown: 527 arrested, 55 cases filed after series of crude bomb blasts
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested 527 people and filed 55 cases during regular drives conducted across the capital over a 24-hour period, media reports said.
According to Bangla News 24, the arrests included 52 people from Ramna Division, 43 from Lalbagh, 57 from Wari, 63 from Motijheel, 79 from Tejgaon, 146 from Mirpur, 41 from Gulshan, 45 from Uttara and one person from the Detective Branch.
During the operation, police recovered an unexploded cocktail, 500 grams of gunpowder, 500 grams of jute cloth, 250 grams of petrol, 35 grams of nails from exploded cocktails, seven pieces of tin, 10 pieces of tape, 104 nails and parts of an exploded cocktail.
Police also seized 54.245 kg of cannabis, 4,115 yaba tablets, 21 grams of heroin and 50 bottles of phensedyl cough syrup.
The arrests came after a series of crude bomb explosions rocked Dhaka last week. Following the blasts, police set up around 200 checkpoints at various locations across the city.
On September 15, a crude bomb exploded outside the Supreme Court shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced seven people, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to death for crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the 2024 July Uprising.
Similar explosions were also reported from Malibagh, Mohakhali and Jatrabari.
The explosions and subsequent police crackdown came as Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was visiting New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
