WB: Cops beaten by sand mafias in Burdwan

Kolkata/Burdwan, Nov 27 (IBNS): As many as four policemen and five staffers of West Bengal government's irrigation department were reportedly beaten by sand mafias at Katwa in West Bengal's Burdwan district while they carrying out operation against illegal sand mining in the wee hours of Friday.

According to reports, five staffers of irrigation department, along with four policemen, conducted an operation against sand mafias, who were lifting sand illegally from Ajay river, around 3 am on Friday.

When the force stopped few trucks, full of sand, 50-60 sand mafias beaten them badly, reports said.

Sand mafias also allegedly stole their mobile phones, purses and watches. Two vehicles of police and irrigation department were also ransacked.

Four policemen and five irrigation staffers were injured badly. One irrigation employee- Debasish Roy- somehow managed to escape from the spot with injury.

A heavy police force rushed to the spot later and rescued injured cops and four irrigation employees on Friday early morning.

However, the injured eight are being treated in Katwa Sub Divisional Hospital. One of them is in critical state and has been shifted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, medical reports said.

The employee, who escaped from the spot, was rescued later from Burdwan town area and has been admitted to a hospital there.

After starting investigation into the case, police have arrested two and detained five suspects so far.
