Hockey legend Pargat Singh named Punjab Congress chief, party sticks with Jat Sikh face
The Congress has appointed former Indian hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, replacing Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.
Pargat Singh's appointment came two days after Warring resigned from the post following months of internal differences within the Punjab unit.
The new chief, who has been an MLA since 2012, previously served as a minister in the Charanjit Singh Channi government.
A change at the top, but continuity in community representation
Pargat Singh, like Warring, is a Jat Sikh. His appointment therefore retains the same broad community representation at the top of the Punjab Congress.
The choice came amid discussions over whether to appoint a Hindu leader or continue with a Sikh face as state party chief.
Former minister and Sangrur MP Vijay Inder Singla had emerged as one of the prominent names under consideration, while Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Rana KP Singh and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria were also discussed.
Punjab Congress factionalism in focus
The leadership change follows months of friction involving different camps within the state unit.
Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and his supporters had repeatedly sought a change at the top, while Warring continued to face pressure over his leadership.
The Congress had earlier replaced Bhupesh Baghel as its Punjab in-charge, appointing Sachin Pilot to the role on September 5.
Pilot subsequently held consultations with state leaders as part of an organisational assessment.
Warring eventually submitted his resignation to Rahul Gandhi on October 2. He later said he believed Pilot wanted him removed, though Warring also stated that nobody had explicitly asked him to resign.
Channi, Bajwa and the road ahead
Channi remains an important figure in the state unit and currently heads the Congress campaign committee.
Partap Singh Bajwa is the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, while other senior leaders have also been involved in the leadership discussions.
The factional differences became increasingly public through the summer, with leaders divided over Warring's continuation as state Congress chief.
Channi and Warring later appeared together at a September protest rally led by Sachin Pilot, signalling an effort to present a more united front.
With Pargat Singh now taking over, the Congress faces the task of managing these competing factions as Punjab heads towards its next Assembly election.
