Lucknow, Nov 23 (IBNS) Eyeing the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Monday reached out to sugarcane farmers on Monday by undertaking a Kisan Padyatra in Saharanpur district.

Gandhi interacted with the peasants with farmers in Hardakhedi, Sikrikalan and Patni villages of the district, spoke on their distress and criticised the policy of the Narendra Modi government at the centre.

Saharanpur is part of western Uttar Pradesh where there is a major issue of payment arrears to sugarcane growers who are seeking a higher price for their produce.

Assembly elections in the state are likely in the first half of 2017.
