Ranchi/IBNS: Two people died and 10 others were injured in a violence which broke out in Jharkhand's capital Ranchi Friday during the protests against the suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma's controversial comment on Prophet Muhammad, media reports said.

Two people, who were brought to the hospital after they had clashed with the police, succumbed to their injuries, the authorities at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences confirmed.

Police had fired in the air and resorted to lathicharge to control the protesters who were hurling stones at Ranchi's Main Road.

The protesters were demanding the arrest of Sharma, who along with other BJP spokesperson Naveen Jindal had passed the comment on Prophet Muhammad.

Heavy force has been deployed in the area where the clash broke out Friday.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has appealed to the people to maintain calm and refrain from any activity that would escalate the volatile situation.

Not just Ranchi, several other cities spanning across nine states have witnessed violent protests over Prophet row.
