An American techie, who was recently laid off from her organisation, chose to pursue an alternative career of shucking oysters for partygoers at lavish events.

Hannah Chea worked as a data analytics engineer with Paramount until she was removed from the company in September.

Speaking to CNBC, Chea, who once made a six-figured salary for her tech role, said: "I fully expected this layoff."

“I really like the novelty of it,” Chea said abut her new profession.

She  said: “I think it’s crazy to say I only do oyster shucking — in heels. I think I’m a very extroverted person. I really wanted break the monotony of my remote tech job [and] just staring at a computer all day.”

She performs her task of shucking oysters with a catering company named Oysters XO.

Chea declined to share how much she makes shucking oysters, but told CNBC that it’s generally “more than I thought it would be, and it definitely surprised me, which is also why I keep shucking.”

Chea said she was not hurrying up to find another tech job.

“I’m not in a rush to find a new tech job,” Chea said.

“I’ve been taking this time to just think about my life and what’s next,” she said.

She said: “I do feel very happy to have relief from the stress and worries about my job. I think that was such a big stressor, working in tech.”
