Ukraine: Russia launches drone attack on Kharkiv, three die

At least three people died and 64 others were injured after Russia targeted apartment buildings in Kharkiv region on Wednesday.

The attack left 64 others injured.

Zelenskyy Reacts On X

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the injured people included nine children.

"Recovery efforts are currently underway in Kharkiv following last night’s Russian Shahed drone strike. The attack hit ordinary residential buildings. As of now, 64 people have been reported injured, including 9 children," he wrote on X.

He said: "Tragically, three people were killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones. There were many fires in the city, but as always, our rescuers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine acted swiftly."

He thanked municipal services, the National Police and other emergency services for their prompt response to the situation.

He said: "Every new day now brings new vile Russian attacks, and almost every strike is telling. Russia deserves increased pressure, and it proves with every hit on ordinary life that the current pressure is not enough. And we must not be afraid or postpone new decisions that could make things more difficult for Russia."

The attack struck a five-story residential building in the city's Slobidskyi district, leaving 15 apartments in flames, Mayor Ihor Terekhov told The Kyiv Independent.

Several homes in the Osnovyanskyi district were also hit by drones.

The large-scale attack also struck a trolleybus depot in the city, several vehicles, playgrounds, and local businesses, regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov told the news portal.

Russia Intensifies Strikes

Russia has intensified its airstrikes on Ukraine in recent days.

According to Moscow, it stepped up its bombing campaign in retaliation for Ukraine’s surprise drone attacks deep inside Russian territory last week codenamed operation spiderweb, read the UN website.

Amid the ongoing conflict, UN humanitarian teams and partners continue to work to help civilians in cities across Ukraine.

They provide first aid, protection services, food, construction materials and other support including counselling and legal advice.
