Two confirmed dead after Vienna building explosion

Vienna, Jun 28 (Xinhua/UNI) A second person has been confirmed dead following a suspected gas explosion that occurred in a local apartment building on Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities here.

Authorities had initially reported 14 people as having been injured in the explosion that tore through several floors of the building as well as part of a neighboring one.

As search efforts continued through the mass of debris on Thursday, a 29-year-old mother had been found dead in the building, with fears that further missing persons could still be buried under the rubble.

It was confirmed on Thursday evening a second casualty had been found. The victim was a man who had yet to be identified, authorities said.

A police spokesperson ruled out the possibility of further casualties.

The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, though at present a defective gas boiler is believed to be the most likely reason.
