Trump threatens 50% tariff on 'all Canadian aircraft', stoking fresh tensions with Ottawa

US President Donald Trump ignited fresh tensions with Canada on Friday by threatening to impose a 50% tariff on all Canadian aircraft sold in the US.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump said the move was in response to Canada’s refusal to certify several business jets made by US firm Gulfstream Aerospace.

"Canada has wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 jets, one of the greatest, most technologically advanced airplanes ever made," wrote Trump, saying that the US will "decertify all aircraft made in Canada," including Bombardier, Canada's largest Quebec-based aircraft maker.

"If this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% tariff on any and all aircraft sold into the United States of America," he stated.

This follows Trump's earlier warning of 100% tariffs if Canada pursues a trade pact with China, dubbed a potential "backdoor" for Beijing's goods.

"China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
