Thousands rally in protest of dire living conditions in Lebanon amid coronavirus outbreak

Beirut/Xinhua: Thousands of Lebanese people on Monday took to the streets across the country to protest against dire living conditions, TV channel MTV reported.

The protesters, who complained about the lack of jobs that led to increased poverty in Lebanon, blocked roads and clashed with the army.

One protester told the TV channel that he did not even have money to feed his 11-year-old son.

"Why would I care about the spread of coronavirus in the country if I do not even have food to eat? My family and I will die from hunger anyway," he said.

The Lebanese army has issued a statement urging people to protest peacefully without damaging streets or attacking public properties.

Lebanon had witnessed nationwide protests since October 17 of 2019 before demonstrations stopped amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.
