Syrian army gives rebels chance to surrender in Saraqeb city

Damascus/Xinhua: The Syrian army on Wednesday gave the rebels in Syria's Saraqeb city in the northwestern province of Idlib a chance to lay down their weapons and surrender, according to the state news agency.

The Syrian army said in a statement the rebels are besieging the civilians in Saraqeb and the Tal Toukan area, noting that these armed men have the chance to lay down their weapons and embark on reconciliation with the government.

The statement said this is the last chance for the rebels to surrender.

This comes as the Syrian army has made strides in the battle against the rebels in Idlib's countryside and has become close to Saraqeb.

The main goal behind the Syrian military's operation that has been dragging over the past few weeks is to secure the Damascus-Aleppo road.

The progress toward Saraqeb comes days after the Syrian forces captured the city of Maarat al-Numan in the southern countryside of Idlib, which was the first big achievement towards securing the main Damascus-Aleppo highway.
