SAA cancels 38 local, international flights to conserve cash

Johannesburg/Xinhua: South African Airways (SAA) on Tuesday announced it was cancelling 38 "low demand" local and international flights as part of a strategy to "conserve cash".

SAA said it was cancelling 28 local flight travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town and Durban. A total of 10 international flights from Johannesburg to Munich and Munich to Johannesburg will be cancelled from January 21 to January 24.

"Any operational changes will be communicated to our travel trade partners and customers at the earliest opportunity and passengers will be re-accommodated on other airlines wherever possible," SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali in a statement.

"Furthermore, during the current process of Business Rescue, these cancellations represent a responsible strategy to conserve cash and optimize the airline's position ahead of any further capital investment," said Tlali.

The SAA has not made profit in a number of years, instead relying on billions of government bailouts. It was placed under business rescue in December as it continued struggling financially.
