S Korea's top nuke envoy leaves for Washington for denuke talks
Seoul, Sep 19 (Xinhua) South Korea's top nuclear envoy left for Washington on Thursday to hold talks with his U.S. counterpart about the Korean Peninsula's denuclearization, according to South Korean Foreign Ministry.
Lee Do-hoon, South Korea's special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, will make a three-day trip to Washington from Thursday, the ministry said.
During the trip, Lee will meet Stephen Biegun, U.S. special representative for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) affairs, to discuss cooperation measures for the peninsula's complete denuclearization and the lasting peace settlement.
Lee will also meet with senior U.S. government officials to make a comprehensive discussion on the peninsula issues and other issues of mutual concern, the foreign ministry said.
Lee's visit came amid rising expectation for the DPRK and the United States to resume working-level denuclearization talks in the near future.
Choe Son Hui, the DPRK's first vice foreign minister, said earlier this month that the DPRK was willing to hold talks with the United States in late September to comprehensively discuss issues the two sides had taken up.
