Guatemala, Feb 14 (IBNS):  Police in Guatemala have detained Juan Alberto Fuentes, Chairman of the charity Oxfam International, on Tuesday, media reports said.

According to media reports, the Omfam Chairman was detained  as a part of a probe into a corruption scandal which dates back to the time when he served as the Guatemala's finance minister.

However, no charges has been brought so far.

" While his arrest is not related to his role at Oxfam, it will heap further pressure on the charity, which is still reeling from revelations that its staff hired prostitutes in Haiti," BBC reported.

Juan Alberto Fuentes has stepped down from his post, Oxfam confirmed.

" Dr. Juan Alberto Fuentes Knight today stepped down as the Chair of the Board of Supervisors of Oxfam International. The Chair is a three-year tenure position that he has occupied since 2015," read a statement issued by Oxfam.

Oxfam said it has appointed Henrietta Campbell, Deputy Chair of Oxfam International, as Acting Chair.

" Dr. Fuentes Knight faces charges brought against him and other former government officials in Guatemala, dating back to his time as Minister of Finance in 2009. Oxfam supports Dr. Fuentes Knight and his decision to devote his time now to vigorously contest these charges," read the statement.
