Number of COVID-19 cases in Italy crosses 100

Rome/Sputnik: The number of people infected with the novel coronavirus in Italy's Lombardy region has reached 89, likely pushing the country's overall number of cases past 100, regional head Attilio Fontana said on Sunday.

"Unfortunately, we have 89 infected cases in Lombardy," Fontana said live on SkyTg24 TV channel, adding that the number of cases in Italy "must have exceeded 100."

The official stressed that the increase of cases of the coronavirus disease, dubbed COVID-19, as well as the quarantine measures, would not affect the life of the region and its capital, Milan.

"We cannot and do not want to limit life in Milan and Lombardy," Fontana said, noting that the authorities will, nevertheless, aim to cut the number of major public events and manifestations.

On Saturday, the country's council of ministers adopted a decree on measures against the outbreak in northern Italy, essentially isolating the virus clusters centered around the cities of Codogno in Lombardy and Vo in Veneto, as two deaths from the coronavirus disease were confirmed.
