Rome/ Sputnik/UNI: Italy has recorded 431 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, which is the smallest overnight increase in the country in three weeks, Angelo Borrelli, the head of the National Civil Protection Department, said on Sunday, adding that the total number of COVID-19 fatalities stood at 19,899.

This is the lowest daily death toll since March 19, when 427 fatalities were recorded.

On March 27, Italian authorities reported the highest number of deaths in a day – 969.

As of Sunday, the total count of COVID-19 cases in Italy has increased to 102,253.

"The number of recovered patients has increased to 34,211," Borrelli said, adding that 1,677 people have recovered over the past 24 hours.

The day before, he announced the recovery of 2,079 patients.

The number of patients in intensive care units continues to decrease, with 297 people having been discharged in a day, and 27,847 people remaining in hospitals. Sixty-nine percent of patients are in self-isolation at home.

According to Borrelli, the total number of COVID-19 cases since the outbreak, including those who had died and recovered, has reached 156,300.

Recent estimates indicate a slowdown in the spread of coronavirus in Italy. Last week, an average of 2,500 new cases were reported every day. The highest daily increase in COVID-19 cases — 4,821 — was recorded in Italy on March 21.
