The grandmother of the 17-year-old teen who was shot dead in a Paris suburb, an episode which triggered violent riots in the country,   has called for an end to the violence.

France has been witnessing several nights of rioting and violence since the death of the teen.

Victim Nahel Merzouk’s grandmother appealed to protesters on Sunday, telling CNN’s affiliate BFMTV: “They should not damage the schools, not break the buses, it was the moms who take the buses.”

“I’m tired,” the grandmother, identified by BMFTV as Nadia, said, adding that Nahel’s mother, “doesn’t have a life anymore.”

How did the violence start?

Nahel M. was shot dead in the Paris suburb of Nanterre on Tuesday morning after he refused to comply with police orders during a traffic stop.

The officer who pulled the trigger on the teenager has been charged with voluntary manslaughter and is in custody.

The fatal police shooting sparked riots across the country.

Violent protesters have clashed with police and set fire to public buildings and vehicles.

Hundreds of protesters have been detained.
