Paris, Mar 24 (IBNS): Col Arnaud Beltrame, the French policeman who swapped himself for a hostage held by a gunmen, has died of his wounds, raising the number of people dead in the incident to four, according to reports on Saturday.

France's Interior Minister Gerard Collomb tweeted in French on Saturday:"Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame has passed away. He died for his country. France will never forget his heroism, his bravery, his sacrifice,"

Beltrame, who swapped himself for a hostage in a rampage and siege at a supermarket in Trèbes town of France on Friday, was stabbed and shot, according to reports.

The radical Islamist gunman, 25-year-old Redouane Lakdim, was shot dead as police brought the siege to an end.

French President Emmanuel Macron branded the incident as "an Islamist terrorist attack", according to media reports.

The French President also hailed Beltrame as a 'hero' and said he had "saved lives and honoured his colleagues and his country".
