Almaty, Feb 27 (Sputnik/IBNS): At least two people have been killed in southern Kazakhstan as a result of an explosion that hit a residential building early on Wednesday.

A number of people have suffered injuries, a spokesperson for the local emergency service told Sputnik.

The incident took place in the city of Taraz, located in the country's Jambyl region.

"There was an explosion in the building. We know about two victims but this information can change, there are injured," the spokesperson said.

The Kazakh government later said, citing the Interior Ministry's Emergency Situations Committee, that the blast had led to a partial collapse of the building. A total of eight people, including the two victims, have been recovered from under the rubble.

The authorities added that the explosion could have been caused by careless handling of gas equipment.
