16 killed in Nigeria village attack

Lagos, Mar 12 (Xinhua/UNI): A new attack by the armed men killed 16 people on Sunday in a village in Nigeria's northern state of Kaduna, local police said Monday.

Yakubu Sabo, a state police spokesperson, who confirmed this to reporters in Kaduna, said the armed men entered Barde village under Maro town in Kajuru area and started shooting sporadically which led to the death of 16 people.

He said upon receiving information, the police mobilized teams of operatives alongside military personnel with a view to apprehending the perpetrators and restoring normalcy to the area.

The spokesperson added that operation was ongoing and the situation has been brought under control.


Sabo appealed for calm and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were affected by the recent carnage. Local police have launched an investigation into the incident, he added.


Kaduna state is one of the states witnessing a number of attacks recently. Unidentified gunmen attacked eight villages in Kajuru area of Kaduna on Feb. 15, leading to more than 130 deaths. Local authorities confirmed on Feb. 27 four villages in the same area were attacked by gunmen, with 29 people killed, including a policeman.
