Nishabd actor Ankit Rathi: Conversation around same sex relationship has already started, people are getting aware slowly

Ankit Rathi plays the role of Neel in the series Nishabd that is on the new channel, Atrangii. It is being co-directed and produced by Mitu. The series is based on the struggles of the rainbow community and one wonders if the actor was apprehensive when he was offered the project.

“I had no inhibition at all. I think if the makers and people involved are apprehensive while making it they should skip it. We need to treat it normally and not create a taboo around such a topic. We need to normalise it in our society,” he says.

Sharing his experience of working with Mitu and her team at Positive Thinkerz, Ankit adds, “It was really great. She gives the actor freedom and space which I guess is very important. I totally enjoyed the process.”

June was the Pride month. Ask if this is one of the reasons for him to say yes to the project and Ankit is quick to add that he wanted to work with Mitu. And, that was his sole reason to take up this series.

Do you think conversations around same sex relations should start now? “I think it has started and people are getting aware slowly. Yes, it will take time but I feel the future is going to be better and happier,” says the actor.

A generational shift in content and programming is happening at the moment. This is the first time a series like Nishabd is being made for TV. “I’m really looking forward to the show and I hope it creates more awareness around people. Can’t wait to find out how the audience reacts to the stories,” he ends.
