Rs 100 in pocket, Rs 1.2 lakh in bank: Comedian Sharon Verma reveals how she built her career in Mumbai
Mumbai/IBNS: There are countless people who dream of moving to Mumbai every day to build a career. While some manage to make it, others struggle to find their footing in the country's financial capital.
In a recent Instagram post, comedian Sharon Verma narrated her journey of moving to Mumbai with just Rs 100 in her pocket and Rs 1.2 lakh in bank savings, as she set out to build her career from scratch.
“I had only Rs. 100 in my pocket besides Rs. 1.2 lakh saving in the bank,” Sharon, who moved to Mumbai four years ago after securing a writing job at JioHotstar, said.
Four years as a writer
During her four years in Mumbai, Sharon worked as a writer for several celebrities, including Ranbir Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Vicky Kaushal and Kiara Advani, among others.
She specifically thanked her manager for helping her showcase her work and ensuring that her ideas reached senior colleagues.
Sharon also spoke about finding a mentor at work and said she felt particularly fulfilled when one of her ideas eventually made it to the screen.
The Mumbai local struggle
Sharon also spoke candidly about her experience of commuting on Mumbai's local trains.
Rather than romanticising the experience, she described it as extremely difficult. However, the view of Mumbai from her office "made it a liiiittle (a lot) better".
From writing to stand-up comedy
Sharon's transition to stand-up comedy came later.
She began performing at open mics in 2024 before leaving her full-time job in February 2025 to pursue stand-up comedy.
She subsequently gained wider recognition through her appearance on Samay Raina's India's Got Latent, particularly for her “Weak Independent Woman” routine.
Sharon later returned to the show as a judge and panelist, marking another chapter in her journey from writer to stand-up comedian.
