Guwahati/IBNS: Conrad Sangma-led NPP in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government’s coalition partner United Democratic Party (UDP) has requested the Meghalaya Chief Minister to initiate a judicial probe into the death of Chesterfield Thangkhiew – former general secretary of militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said that his party has suggested the Meghalaya Chief Minister to initiate a judicial probe into the incident.

“We have suggested that a judicial inquiry should be instituted immediately without any delay in order to clear doubts which are in the minds of the people. Why has this incident taken place which had led to the death of Chesterfield Thangkhiew,” Metbah Lyngdoh said.

On Sunday, Meghalaya Home minister Lakhmen Rymbui who is also a senior leader of UDP tendered his resignation, citing the encounter of former HNLC leader Chesterfield Thangkhiew on August 13.

UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said, “We felt that there is a right decision as a responsible leader and he has taken the decision in a very mature manner.”

On the other hand, several stone pelting incidents reportedly took place in Shillong and its adjoining areas on Sunday night.

Amid curfew miscreants had reportedly attacked a CRPF vehicle and pelted stones at a police outpost in Shillong area on Sunday night.
