Hyderabad, May 5 (IBNS) Roopesh, one of the top Maoists in the country, has been arrested with his wife Shyna in Tamil Nadu in what is being described as a major breakthrough for the police of four southern states.

Roopesh, who had 20 criminal cases against his name, was on the most wanted list of police. He and his wife had evaded arrest for more than 10 years.

Reports said they were arrested on Monday  in a joint operation by the police of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu when they were having coffee inside a bakery at a village near Coimbatore.

Reports said  Roopesh and Shyna have been heading the Maoist movement in Kerala for years and are key strategists in an armed struggle .

Roopesh was allegedly heading the South Indian Regional Committee of Maoists.

A law graduate,  Roopesh has also trained in IT. He is believed to have joined mainstream Maoist activities through the CPI (ML) students' wing. His wife is a former Kerala High Court employee.

The joint force also arrested three other Maoists- Anup from Kerala, Veeramani from Karnataka and Kannan from Tamil Nadu.
