Agartala, dec 20 (IBNS): A Trinamool Congress MLA of Tripura snatched the ceremonial mace of the Speaker in the Assembly and tried to flee with it before being restrained by the marshals, the media reported on Tuesday.

The mace was subsequently recovered and reinstated.

The incident took place on Monday, when TMC MLA and former leader of the Opposition, Sudip Roy Barman, snatched Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath's mace when the Speaker refused to allow a discussion on an alleged sex scandal involving the state's forest minister Naresh Jamatia, according to reports.

The Congress and the TMC were reportedly demanding the expulsion of .Jamatia from the state Cabinet following the allegations.

Jamatia and Mrinmay Sen, councillor of the Agartala Municipal Council, have been accused of molesting a seven-year-old girl, reported the Times of India.

Sen was arrested by Tripura police but later released on bail.

Incidentally, this is the fifth time in the history of the Tripura Assembly that the speaker has lost his ceremonial symbol of authority, media reported.
