Guwahati, Dec 12 (IBNS): Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday took jibe at Bharatiya Janata Party and said the BJP-led government at Centre and in the State has attempted to give citizenship to the illegal Bangladeshi people.

Criticising the BJP-led government and party, Gogoi said in a press conference held at Koindhara that, the government in Centre and State are more adamant to give citizenship to the illegal Bangladeshi people, but would not give attention the people of the state what they want.

“Recently the state government had observed the programme of tribute to the martyrs of Assam agitation. In the programme, the martyrs family had openly opposed the government decision to give citizenship to illegal Bangladeshis. But the BJP-led government refusing it and want to give red carpet to the illegal Bangladeshis,” Gogoi said.

“Rather than detecting illegal Bangladeshi migrants, the governments at the Centre and the State have been trying to provide shelter to illegal migrants on religious grounds,” Gogoi said.

“They violated the Assam Accord which was signed following Assam agitation. Upto 1971, we had took overall burden of Bangladeshis and now we will not take more burden,” the former Assam CM said.

The former Assam CM also attacked the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the alliance partner of BJP and said that 855 persons were martyred in Assam agitation only because of AGP leaders.
