Supreme Court rejects states' plea to overturn order on Padmaavat

Both the states pleaded to the Supreme Court seeking a change in its order. The hearing was held on Tuesday.

The states argued that states can impose a ban considering a law and order situation, reports said.

The Supreme Court on Thursday lifted a ban, imposed by four BJP-ruled states, on Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial film 'Padmaavat' (earlier 'Padmavati'), paving a path for the release of the movie across the country.

Despite the clearance by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the ban was imposed by the BJP-ruled  Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat.

However, Uttar Pradesh, another BJP-run state,  did not impose any ban on the film.

The film has been mired in controversy after several fringe groups, mostly Shri Rajput Karni Sena, accused the film maker of distorting history and portraying Rani Padmini in poor light in the movie.

Haryana BJP leader Suraj Pal Amu even offered a bounty of Rs. 10 crore on the heads of Bhansali and Padukone.

The CBFC has announced that Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone starrer film will be issued a U/A certificate.

The CBFC suggested the makers of the film to change the title to 'Padmavat'.

The film will hit the big screens on Jan 25. Earlier it was slated to release on Dec 1, 2017.

Apart from Deepika, the film starres Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles.
