Sitaram Yechury elected new CPM general secretary
Visakhapatnam, Apr 19 (IBNS): Veteran politician Sitaram Yechury has been unanimously elected the new general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
His name was proposed for the post by outgoing party chief Prakash Karat and veteran leader S Ramachandran Pillai, who was also initially considered a front runner for the post.
Yechury's name had been proposed after party stalwart S Ramachandra Pillai decided to withdraw from the race for the general secretary's post.
The official announcement of Yechury being the general secretary of the CPI (M) was made at the end of the six-day party congress at Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
The CPM also elected a new Central Committee, which is its highest executive body, of 91 members, besides naming five special invitees and five permanent invitees.
A new 16-member Politburo has also been formed. It includes Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat, Manik Sarkar, P Vijayan, MA Bedi, Suryakant Mishra, AK Padhmanabhan, Mohd Salim, Sitaram Yechury.
