A 24-year-old postgraduate dentistry student allegedly died by suicide at her home in Mumbai’s Antop Hill area, with a suicide note indicating that she had been facing mental harassment from her boyfriend, media reports said.

According to police, the student, identified as Stuti Sonwane, left behind a six-page note in which she described her relationship as having turned toxic.

She reportedly wrote that her boyfriend frequently accused her of cheating and made derogatory remarks about her character, which caused her severe emotional distress.

The note also makes an implicit reference to the 2022 murder of 27-year-old Shraddha Walkar in Delhi, who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend Aaftab Poonawalla.

Stuti wrote that her friends were aware of the difficulties in her relationship and would often jokingly say that she might “one day be found in a fridge,” referring to the shocking case in which Walkar’s body parts were allegedly stored in a refrigerator.

Stuti lived with her parents and sister. On Tuesday morning, when she did not come out of her room until around 11 am, her parents called out to her but received no response.

The family then broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling.

She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police have registered a case of accidental death and launched an investigation. Officials said they are examining the contents of the suicide note and probing the role of the boyfriend.

Statements of family members and others known to the victim are also being recorded as part of the inquiry.
