Republic Day: Three blasts rock upper Assam

Guwahati, Jan 26 (IBNS): Three serial blasts rocked Assam on Friday morning while the state celebrated 69th Republic Day.

The incident took place in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

No casualties have been reported.

A top police official said that suspected militants of banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) engineered the three low intensity blasts.

According to the reports, first explosion took place near by Jagun police station in upper Assam district at around 9-10 am.

Suspected ULFA-I militants planted bomb in a drain nearby the police station.

After the first explosion, second bomb exploded at the same place.

On the other hand, third bomb exploded at Tirap Colliery area near Ledo.

The top police official said the third bomb was planted at a culvert and it was a low intensity bomb.

Top police and army officials rushed to the area.

10 militant groups of the North Eastern region including ULFA-I, Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO) and National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit), People’s Democratic Council of Karbilongri (PDCK), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Hynniutrep National liberation Council (HNLC), National Liberation Front Twipra (NLFT) and CorCom of Manipur called for boycott the Republic Day celebrations and also called shut down in the region on Friday.

Meanwhile, Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi had hoisted the national flag at Khanapara in Guwahati on the occasion of Republic Day.
