Rajasthan govt faces flak from opposition BJP after passing bill to register child marriages

Jaipur/IBNS: The Congress government in Rajasthan is under attack from the opposition after passing a bill to amend an act on mandatory registration of marriages, including that of child marriages.

As the bill was passed in the state Assembly on Friday, the opposition staged a walkout.

The assembly passed the Rajasthan Compulsory Registration of Marriages (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which amends the Rajasthan Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2009, on Friday.

The bill mandates that information on child marriage must be furnished by their parents or guardians within 30 days of the wedding.

The bill passed in the Rajasthan assembly will now allow the government to appoint an additional district marriage registration officer (DMRO) and block marriage registration officer to register marriages.

Protesting the bill, opposition BJP accused the Congress government in Rajasthan of promoting child marriage.

In the assembly, BJP MLAs had also demanded a division of votes and when the government did not agree, they staged a walkout.

Leader of the opposition Gulab Chand Kataria said that registering child marriage is like giving legal recognition to such marriages.
