Punjab: School van falls into drain near Batala, 3 kids killed, 20 injured

Pindi, Gurdaspur, Jan 12 (IBNS): At least three kids were killed while 20 others were injured as an overloaded and speeding school van fell into a 10-ft-deep drain at Pindi village near Batala town, in Gurdaspur district of Punjab on Tuesday, media reports said.
"The deceased were identified as Harkirat Singh (10), his cousin Harpreet Singh (11) and Jaspreet Singh (15). They were residents of Wadala Veeram village in Amritsar district and studying in Captain School of Excellence (CSE) at Fatehgarh Churian, near Pindi village. Jaspreet was the grandson of the bus driver, Dalbir Singh," The Hindustan Times reported.
 
The school van, which has the registration number of Daman and Diu, was carrying more than 60 students against the capacity of 32. 
 
In fact, the driver did not have a valid driving licence, reports said.
 
The van went fell into the drain while it was on its way to the school in the morning when it collided head-on with a Gypsy. 
 
Passersby and residents of nearby villages rushed to the spot and rescued the students, who were buried under the van.
