Punjab CM Amarinder Singh urges EAM to evacuate Indians stuck in Afghanistan

New Delhi/UNI: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday urged External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar to evacuate all Indians, including around 200 Sikhs, who are stuck in Afghanistan following recent developments in the war-torn country.

"Urge Dr S Jaishankar, MEA, GoI, to arrange for immediate evacuation of all Indians, including around 200 Sikhs, stuck in Afghanistan after the #Taliban takeover. My government is willing to extend any help needed to ensure their safe evacuation," the Chief Minister posted on Twitter.

Earlier on Sunday, the Taliban entered Kabul to negotiate the transfer of power with the government of President Ashraf Ghani, who then stepped down and left the country.

Ghani said his decision was dictated by the desire to prevent violence as the militants were ready to carry out an attack on the capital.

Since yesterday's bloodless coup, several videos have emerged of people running onto the airport runways and trying to leave the country in a feverish haste.

Notably, India also evacuated 129 people on Sunday.

Indian Airline sources said on the directions of the Civil Aviation Ministry, the flight frequency has been increased for the month of August with more flights planned over the coming week.

The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency session at 7:30 pm (IST) today over the worsening situation in the country. Notably, India is holding the month-long presidency of the UNSC.
