Massive quake hits Chile; 5 dead

Santiago, Apr 2 (IBNS): At least five people died as a massive earthquake, measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale hit Northern Chile on Tuesday, said reports.

The earthquake struck off the coast of Northern Chile, around 55 miles southeast of Cuya, at 8:46 p.m. local time, reported The Santiago Times.

The quake was followed by at least 20 aftershocks, some measuring around 5 on the Richter scale, in the area.

"The Interior Ministry has confirmed five deaths in Iquique and surrounding areas and at least three people seriously injured so far," said the newspaper.
