IIT Kharagpur students gherao director overnight over hostel fee hike, begin hunger strike

Kolkata, Dec 21 (IBNS): Protesting against the sudden hike in hostel fees, more than 200 PhD students of IIT Kharagpur gheraoed several officials, including the director, dean and registrar, and few faculties of the prestigious institute on Tuesday overnight.

The authority has announced to hike the fee from 29,000 to 37,000 rupees, which will be applicable from upcoming session (January 2017).

Demanding the withdrawal of increased fee, the students have started agitation in the campus and few of them are on hunger strike.

An agitating students of the reputed institute, N Surya Prakash, said,"Protesting against the unjustified fee hike at IIT Kharagpur, we have started agitation and hunger strike here and our protests will be continued until the fee hike is rolled back."

"Neither the director nor other officials are ready to meet us. They strictly said that they won't discuss the matter with the students," the student added.

However, the gherao was withdrawn on Wednesday, while the sit-in-demonstration and hunger strike are still underway there.

No reaction, on this issue, has been received from the institute authority so far.
