Former Assam Assembly Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi passes away
Guwahati/IBNS: Former speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly and sitting Congress MLA Pranab Kumar Gogoi passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Monday night.
He was suffering from age-related ailments since past several days and was admitted at a private hospital in Guwahati.
He is survived by his wife Mohini Gogoi, three sons and their spouses and grandchildren, besides a host of relatives.
Born on Aug 19, 1936, in Dibrugarh, the Congress veteran was first elected to the Assam assembly in 2001.
An advocate by profession, Pranab Kumar Gogoi was elected to the Assam Assembly from Sivasagar assembly constituency for a consecutive fourth term.
From 2006-2011, he was served as a minister of Tarun Gogoi-led cabinet and from 2011-2016 he was the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
His body was taken to Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati and former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Congress members, workers had offered their floral tribute to the veteran Congress leader.
During the previous Congress government, Pranab Kumar Gogoi had come out with a definition of the term ‘Assamese’.
On the hand, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed profound grief on the sudden demise of Pranab Kumar Gogoi.
