Footballer who allegedly joined the militants surrenders to the government forces
Srinagar, Nov 17 (IBNS): Local footballer, 20-year old Majid Khan, who had allegedly joined the ranks of militants last week, finally gave in to his parents' appeals and surrendered to the government forces.
According to reports, Majid Arshid Khan, who was seen brandishing a rifle in a social media post, surrendered before 1st RR on Thursday night.
According to J&K police, Majid had made contact with overground militant workers and joined Lashkar-e-Toiba.
He also showed up with an AK-47 at the funeral of a militant who was killed in an encounter in Khund.
The surrender followed after a video of Majid’s mother, Asyia, crying and asking her to son to return home, was seen in circulation.
Locals said that Majid when not playing for the local football team used to work for a charity in the area.
Majid’s surrender comes a day after Kashmir police chief Muneer Khan reiterated the surrender offer for local men to give up militancy.
He said that those local men who lay down arms will be adequately supported and rehabilitated.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday credited the 'mother's love" for the surrender of footballer-turned-militant Majid Khan in south Kashmir.
"A mother’s love prevailed. Her impassioned appeal helped in getting Majid, an aspiring footballer back home. Every time a youngster resorts to violence, it is his family which suffers the most," tweeted Mehbooba.
