Execution of 2012 Delhi gangrape convicts: Order reserved till 1700 hrs

New Delhi/UNI: Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana on Friday reserved his order till 1700 hrs on the plea of Tihar jail authorities that mercy petition of one of the convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case is pending and the rest can be hanged on Saturday as per order of the court.

Defence counsel yesterday sought a stay on the execution of the four convicts on February 1 by submitting that legal remedies of some are yet to be availed. He said that according to the Delhi Prison rules, none of the four convicts in the same crime can be hanged till the last has exhausted all legal options including the mercy petition.

Tihar Jail authorities after filing a status report opposed the plea by saying only one convict's plea is pending and the others can be hanged as per order of the court.

Defence submitted before the court to adjourn the executions "sine die" (with no appointed date for resumption) as mercy plea of Vinay Sharma is pending before the President of India. Counsel said,"As per rules when one convict's plea is pending, others cannot be hanged."
